The Authenticator

An LCD screen is disassembled and removed from its original function. The screen is then brought inside the authenticator where it is destroyed and manipulated to produce a one of a kind art object. In so doing, the mass produced multiple is transformed into an auratic object made possible only by the transformation of the Authenticator and it’s operator, in this case, the hand of the artist. The final work is installed as a lightbox and becomes a meditation on conversations around the history of painting and photography in the context of Walter Benjamin’s essay on Mechanical Reproduction.
